By the title you probably expect something about listening to the Break Room. Sure, I’d love you to do that and do it often. However, what I mean is listen to the people you are speaking with. It’s easy to check e-mail, take a shit, watch TV all why talking to someone on the phone. We all do it and we all miss crucial nuggets in a conversation. Think about the time you told someone something really BIG and they respond with a half-hearted grunt. You heart sinks and you feel like a fool that you were all excited to tell the person your bit of “earth shattering” news, then you hear …the toilet flush.

I had a similar experience the other day. Jennae gave birth to our third son Jameson Brady Moran on Tuesday March 11th at 3:11 in the morning. We were excited, but concerned over his breathing. The medical professionals tried to reassure us, but we kept pointing out our concerns. Short story, he ended up in the NICU under an oxygen tent. We were calling close family members to update them on his status and to get some reassurance from the ones who will love him as much as we do.

Today’s cell phones are great, you can update social networking statuses, e-mail, watch TV and umm, oh yeah, make calls from them. Mine nearly exploded on Jameson’s birthday and the battery eventually died. I did not have my charger at the hospital, so to call another family member, I used Jennae’s phone.

The family member answered their phone thinking it was Jennae, because her cell number popped up on caller ID. I said, “No it’s Bill.” “Oh, hi Bill, I thought it was Jennae.” I said, “I am using her cell phone, because my batteries dead.” Family member, “DEAD!? WHAT?! DEAD? THE BABY IS DEAD” OH MY GOD! OH, OH, OH, I NEED TO SIT DOWN…WHAT…WHAT _ DEAD…” Finally I can get a word in edgewise and explain it’s my cell phone battery, not my son that is dead! Then I explain that Jameson was in NICU and the panic sets back in…it was like an SNL skit.

Jameson is doing much better and so is the family member who does not listen well. When I talked to the family member today, they told me that yesterdays exhibit of bad listening skills ruined their day. The person cancelled plans they were so shook up, all because they didn’t listen well. Pull your head out of your ass and listen, really listen…it could save you a lot of headaches.

Please, oh please tell me the crap I’ve been hearing, is false. Rumor, spun in my direction, has it you may be on your way out? What, in gods name, will all the people, of limited sanity that use your show as their personal brainfart dumping ground, do? My god the world is a cruel and unusual place, but to possibly lose the one and only bastien of hope in Rochester, why the thought simply sickens me. Please hold whilest I vomit. WOW, was that ever delicious. By the way, never eat a k’nish and drink Bark’s root beer together. To sum this up, I pray that this is all just a bunch of childish balderdash that’s been crapped out of some punk fag, PT Cruiser driving, snuggy not havin, B. Rob never listening, Aztec owning, never gone to balls.com, DOME POLISHER! Cuz, if it’s true then my radio shall be used to kill me in the bathtub. A day without Brain Robinson is like a day without my slap chop and who wants to live in a world like that?

I was called for jury duty recently. I’m sure that anyone who gets the summons in the mail feels that same sense of dread. Usually, the next line of thought is, “How am I gonna get out of this?” Now, I always joke about how I would get out of serving when I say I’ll go in and blurt out, “I can spot a guilty guy a mile away!,” or “Off with his head!” or something similar. Well realistically, you can’t do that. There are legitimate reasons to not serve, and those are not evident until the actual jury selection process. If you try any of those hare-brained approaches mentioned previously, there’s a good chance that you’ll be cited for contempt of court, and pay a hefty fine. The fact is, it is your civic duty to serve on a jury. I am very glad that I did. I’m not lying when I tell you that it will, in all probability, remain one of the more memorable events in my life. Seriously. It was fascinating, and interesting, and solemn, and important. It’s not like it is on the court room dramas that we see on TV. Sure, the surroundings are what you’d expect, and all of the principals are there: judge, lawyers, prosecutors, defendant, sheriff’s deputies. But when you sit in that jury box and listen to testimony and opening & closing statements, the reality is inescapable. And it’s very powerful. At least it was for me. As my jury duty was for a criminal case, it was jarringly real to know that myself and 11 other individuals were going to decide the fate of 2 people, with one of them very possibly going to jail. Jail is not a place you or I would wanna be. I found myself totally immersed in the whole procedure. I listened intently to every word that was said by everyone involved. You have to. This is not TV where there’s going to be a commercial break. This is not Judge Judy. This was real life. The deliberations were very intense and at times troubling. 12 people in a room deciding the fate of someone based on information that was gleaned from the trial. Sometimes, you can’t get all of the info that you might want in order to reach a verdict, and that adds to the difficulty of reaching a unanimous decision. But in the end, that is what is needed-unaniminity. After having answered the call to serve my civic duty, I feel more than ever that if you’re called, you need to do it. Look forward to it, embrace it, be involved in it, and see 1st hand how our judicial system works. And it does work. No system is perfect, but I believe that the way we do it in the U.S. is as close as you can get. An amazing experience.

Thank you! This morning we raised close to $875 for Intervol, a Rochester community based non-profit organization dedicated to serving others through the recovery and redistribution of medical supplies and equipment; to bridging local hospitals and medical professionals with other countries and care-giving organizations in areas of need. For the next few months Intervol will be focused on Haiti. Learn more about Intervol at http://www.intervol.org/

We like to go “grass roots” when we raise money. It’s just us and you! We put people on street corners with home made signs begging for money and you give! Thank you! It is a very unconvential fund raising method, some people do not give because they do not believe it is legit. It is! And some of the Break Room faithful, Pat Duffy, Toothless Eddie, Willie Lightfoot, Carl the Bills Fan, and listener Cathy with her family, stood freezing in various parts of town with their home made signs for about 3 hours and with very little pre-promotion raised close to $875! Thank you, thank you, thank you! We have the best listeners.

It kills me every time. I call for an inquiry on some kind of bill and I get connected with a person in another country. Sounds like India or some similar locale. They allegedly speak English but I have trouble understanding them most of the time. These conversations take twice as long because I always have to ask them to repeat what they just said. Oh yeah…with a heavy accent, they tell me their name is “Jeff” or “Jane.” Right. Your name is Sanjay or Rajeev, but it ain’t “Jeff.” Please. Now, truth be told, if English is not your first language, it is an incredibly difficult and complicated language to learn. All I ask is that all of these companies who are saving a buck by having their customer service outside of the US of A get people from a country that can speak…the…language. Or, at the very least, teach them a little better. No, a LOT better. Better yet, bring the jobs back here to the US. Maybe it’s a conspiracy to discourage people from calling to complain or dispute a bill…It kills me every time.

I knew Arthur Guinness was B-R-I-L-L-I-A-N-T! But, I had no idea just how BRILLIANT! He invented time travel! No really!

The above picture is of the time travel potion, also know as Guinness. This beauty was poured by one of my favorite bar tenders and a favorite person, B.C. at Thirsty’s. I swallowed this concoction and about 4 others and the next thing I knew I was waking up in my bed at and it was 6:30PM! This picture was taken at 1:33PM, I leaped through time! Granted it was only about 5 hours, but can you do that? Not with out the help of Arthur Guinness and his dark magic potion! Hell, I am thinking about drinking a bunch and leaping forward to Christmas Day just to see what I am going to get. That way I will know how to act when opening specific gifts, reaction is everything on Christmas Day.

One gift you may consider is an 18 pack of Guinness . Yes it’s delicious and now you know it is magical. Imagine the power of time travel! Oh, side effects include loss of memory, nausea, pissed of spouse, upset stomach, diarrhea , crying children, vomiting and excessive sleepiness. Arthur Guinness was B-R-I-L-L-I-A-N-T!

It’s the most wonderful time of the year. Last week our oldest son Jackson was hospitalized for long term EEG monitoring of his brain and three days later the worst was ruled out. It’s the most wonderful time of the year.

Today was our younger son Jordan’s turn. Jordan has severe food allergies. Severe is a strong word, but appropriate. Jordan is allergic to milk, soy, soy lethicin and a lot of other crap that goes into creating our food. Read the labels on foods and you’ll see what a challenge it is to feed Jordan, but we (really his mother) have and well. His mother, Jennae, even makes him special desserts, so the guy never feels left out at parties or celebrations.

Lately he has been complaining that his stomach hurts after eating, despite taking a host of medicine to help control his severe acid reflux. Back to the specialist, then back to the hospital for an endoscopy. Jordan’s third of his life. How many parents have pictures of the inside of their kid’s esophagus and stomach? We have a photo albums worth. As expected Jordan’s is abnormal.

The new photos show that Jordan’s esophagus tissue is thickening because of the reflux, there are also abscesses, and where most people’s esophagus is smooth, his has little bumps. The doctor took seven biopsies and doesn’t want to say much about what she saw until the results of the biopsies are back. Some presents you can not wait to tear into, others you hesitate. It is the most wonderful time of the year, right?

It is the most wonderful time of the year! It’s busy and rushed, a great distraction. I study, or attempt to study, Buddhist philosophy and find the teachings to be of great help to keep “present,” not easy to do when the “what ifs” and the “what the fucks” sneak in. However, when my attempt to stay “present” fails, I tear into my other favorite presents, Guinness and Jameson. (Pardon me while I take a CHUG!) Then I come back to the moment.

In the moment I remember, we’re all here and these are some good times. Jordan was cracking jokes with the anesthesiologist, even blew the doc’s weak joke which was, “What do you call a pig that knows karate?” Jordan blurted out “A pork chop!” Plus, there is snow to ski, sled and pummel each other. My buddy Tommy always makes me laugh, especially when he awkwardly calls to see how we’re doing. Jennae, who is 7 months pregnant , makes the holidays great no matter what is going on around us and she has the perfect egg-nog to brandy ratio! Yeah, it IS the most wonderful time of the year!

If you have kids, you know how stressful things can get and it is not always due to their behavior. Sometimes it’s their health!

Our oldest son Jackson has been having a series of odd “spells.” That sounds like what your relatives say when 90 year-old Great Aunt Millie does a swan dive into her buternut squash soup at Christmas dinner, “Pick Aunt Millie out of her soup and BE CAREFUL OF HER WIG, she’s had one of her spells again!”

Jackson has been falling a sleep, mid-sentence and can not be woken up and it’s not for lack of trying. The kid is out! Cold! He is a typically active nine year-old boy who sleeps for an average of nine to nine and a half hours a day, so what the…that’s what the doctors want to find out!

Last night we kept him up all night, he went strong ’till 4 AM, then I got him up made him touch his toes a few times and walk around, but had to let him sleep a little at 5. The idea was not to torture him, but he had to sleep during his EEG test this morning. Try being nine, having all this hooked to your head and being told, “Go to sleep!” He did and we’ll get the results later in the week.
